Smart Investments: Work Outfits

Yeap, another work week has dawned upon us and the only thing I look forward to is getting creative with work outfits for the week (most days, at least).

Unfortunately it isn't always that easy.

How many of you feel the same? I'm totally guilty of buying too many different tops, skirts, dresses, you name it. And the best part is, I always end up going back to that same old blouse and that same pair of pants I've had for years! Not cool, not hip.

I've devised a little plan to help allow for better choices in the morning before going to work.

Here is my list of little investments to make. You've got to have these basics to complete your work wardrobe and you're all set! Dressing up for work will be easy and you won't ever be late again!

1. Tailored button down shirt, best in white.
No brainer investment piece. You WILL need it somehow, sometime.
Wear it on its own or pair it with anything. It sharpens any other piece on you.
Remember to get one that's good quality, one that will last many washes. Most importantly, make sure it fits perfect. If it doesn't, then look for another one.

Where to buy?
Zara and Mango has quite a good range of affordable work shirts that fit quite well. I hear Gap has a load of printed and non-printed shirts under $50.
Otherwise, J.Crew is my absolute favourite!

2. Pencil skirt, best in one colour.
Another great investment piece because it's so versatile.
Wear it with a shirt for work. On days when you're feeling like you want to be a bit more comfortable, put on a loose blouse or knit and you'll look just as chic. For after work occasions, pair it with a little sexy blouse and pop on some jewelry and you'll be ready to party in no time!
It even works with a t-shirt!

Where to buy?
I don't have a favourite brand for pencil skirts. I've purchased mine from H&M, Bershka and Forever 21 and they fit perfect.

3. Sheath dress.
For days when time for mixing and matching or layering is totally out of the window! Easy peasy. The best part is, it looks so much more sophisticated than the actual process of throwing it on and walking out the door. Need I say more?
Remember to make sure it fits right. If it rides up when you walk, it doesn't fit you properly.
And you know who dresses in sheath dresses ALL THE TIME?
Yeap, Ms. Anna Wintour herself!

Where to buy?
Local Malaysian online stores have very affordable work dresses for sale. For example Doublewoot. I've purchased quite a few pieces from them before. I've seen many beautiful pieces from Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge and Mango. They stock work worthy dresses every season.
If you've got lots of moolah to burn, Victoria Beckham and Roland Mouret make the most beautiful structured dresses in all the land!

4. Slim fit trouser
Just like the shirt, it'll take some time finding one with the perfect fit.
But when you do, you'll be amazed how it transforms any being into a Jenna Lyons!
If you've got an amazing pair of shoes to flaunt, this is THE pant to wear it with.
This is also the new formal chic. Hallelujah!

Sorry that they are all pictures of Jenna Lyons! She is in my opinion, the most stylish woman I have ever seen!

Where to buy?
I've seen quite a few at Zara and Mango. But then again, nothing beats J. Crew!

5. Pumps or kitten heels
It will be THE best investment to make simply because it will never ever go out of style and you can wear it anywhere - at the office, to a client meeting, day out at the mall, for a party, to a charity show, on a date and the list goes on and on and on...
Invest in one that is comfortable, this is of utmost importance.
Get one in black and another in nude and you'll never have to worry about shoes ever again.

Where to buy?
Zara and Mango have decent pairs certain seasons. Aldo has a good range but not so comfortable in my opinion. I have one Topshop pair I bought a long time ago, and is still wearable today! Japanese shoe maker Esperanza makes really comfortable shoes, except that they're a little old fashioned. Tony Bianco is my absolute favourite.

6. Tote Bag
Best for lugging everything you need under the sun with you all day long e.g. wallet, documents, ipad, sunnies, scarf, travel make up kit, lipstick, external hard drive (if you're insane like me) yada yada yada..Tote bags look chic whether used for a business meeting or Sunday brunch.

Where to buy?
I love totes by Zara! Otherwise Massimo Dutti has some cute bags too. I also noticed that H&M has got quite a few tote bags recently released in their latest collection.

I hope this works for you. It will take some time looking for the right pieces. Just remember that these are INVESTMENT pieces. Investments take time and cost a little more because they'll be with you for the long haul. Trust me when I say that it'll be worth it!

Let me know if you've got any feedback! Have a fantastic work week everyone!
